National track cycling head coach John Beasley has extended his contract for two years starting from January 2018, Tim Newenham confirmed.
The Australian, who was linked with a move to the United Arab Emirates upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the year, has been with the Malaysia track cycling team for over a decade and moulded the likes of Azizulhasni Awang and Fatehah Mustapa into world-class riders.
Hence, according to the Podium Programme director, it was an easy decision to renew his contract.
"We are delighted to say he has done a fantastic job and worked with the Podium Programme so well that we will continue his contract," said Newenham.
"The thing we particularly like [about Beasley] is not just the success we see at the world level or the SEA Games, but the fact the success comes from the whole team of people that John embraces, from sports scientists to the Podium [people]."
Newenham also added that Beasley is keen to continue his services until the 2020 Olympics, which will depend on the national team's achievements at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games next year.
"At the Commonwealth Games, there are 77 countries, which is a big level-up [compared to the SEA Games] and then there's Asian Games," he said.
"But when it comes to the Olympics, which is our big target, there were 216 countries at the last Olympics.
"It is a massive step-up, so we really need John and everyone to work together to try getting the ultimate performances at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and, of course, Tokyo 2020."
