Esther Cheah clinched a women's masters gold medal at the 25th Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships on Wednesday to seal a successful outing for Malaysia in Kuwait.
Cheah's 452-445 win over defending champion Jung Dawun of Korea on the final day was Malaysia's first-ever victory in the women's masters event.
It was also Malaysia's third women's gold medal at the tournament, following success in the women's singles (Shalin Zulkifli) and women's trios (Shalin, Cheah and Sin Li Jane) events.
However, it was not enough to topple Korea for the women's overall champion crown.
The Korean ladies won three gold, four silver and two bronze medals, while Malaysia had three gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
Despite that, Malaysia returned home with heads high after the men's team ended their campaign with three gold and one silver, taking the men's overall champion title at the same time.
The Malaysian men's team won gold in the men's singles (Timmy Tan), All-Events (Tan), men's trios (Rafiq Ismail, Syafiq Ridhwan and Ahmad Muaz).
With a total of six gold, one silver and four bronze medals, Malaysia scored their best Asian Championships outing and the overall champion title ahead of Korea (3-4-4) and China (2-1-1).
