Hamish Watson has been forced to drop out of the British and Irish Lions side to face Japan on Saturday after suffering a concussion.

The flanker was one of eight players – four of whom were Scotland representatives – poised to make debuts against Japan at Murrayfield.

Instead, Watson – the Six Nations Player of the Year - will now have to go through return to play protocols after a concussion suffered as his team prepared for the match in Jersey on Tuesday.

As a result, Wales' Justin Tipuric, who has featured on two previous Lions tours, has been promoted to the starting XV, having initially been left out of the matchday 23.

The development means Warren Gatland's line-up now features seven debutants.

Scotland props Rory Sutherland and Zander Fagerson and wing Duhan van der Merwe are still primed to make their Lions bows.

Inside Centre Bundee Aki and wing Josh Adams are set to make debuts, while back-rows Tadgh Beirne and Jack Conan will get their first taste of Lions rugby.

Captain Alun Wyn Jones, meanwhile, will make his 21st Lions appearance.

The Lions take on Japan for the first time at Murrayfield before heading on tour to South Africa for a three-Test series against the Springboks.

Their first tour match in South Africa takes place on July 3 against former Super Rugby side the Lions, who finished as runners-up three times in that competition.

None of the 11 England players in the Lions squad are included in the starting XV for the Japan game, which will be witnessed by 16,500 fans in Edinburgh.
