The Lakers appear like they're preparing a sizable contract for Jason Kidd.

Los Angeles is expected to make Kidd the highest paid assistant coach in the NBA, according to a report from The Athletic, which cites unidentified league sources.

The Hall of Fame point guard was initially in the running for the head coaching job before being passed up for former Pacers and Magic coach Frank Vogel, who signed a three-year deal with the Lakers in May.

Kidd previously coached the Nets and Bucks. Milwaukee parted ways with him in January of last year, in the heat of a season in which the team finished seventh in the Eastern Conference.

Lionel Hollins, who coached alongside Kidd in Brooklyn, was also brought onto the Lakers' staff Tuesday, according to an ESPN report, which cites unidentified league sources.

Los Angeles has revamped its coaching staff over the last few months as it looks to improve upon last year's 37-45 season. It missed the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season in 2018-19 but has the the No. 4 pick in June's NBA Draft — which it could use to leverage in a trade to land a star to pair with LeBron James.
