Nick Kyrgios insists his abdominal strain is "not too serious", and is determined to give himself "the best chance" to be fit for the Australian Open.

The former Wimbledon champion was forced to withdraw from an exhibition match against Novak Djokovic on Thursday, after an ultrasound revealed a grade one strain.

After undergoing knee and wrist surgeries, Kyrgios returned to competitive tennis for the first time in 18 months at last week's Brisbane International.

But after losing to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the singles, the 29-year-old stated his belief he would "almost need a miracle" for his "wrist to hold up" to enable him to feature in Melbourne.

Nevertheless, Kyrgios is not giving up on competing in his first major since reaching the 2022 US Open quarter-finals.

"I've still got five days up my sleeve," he told Australia's 7News. "I'm probably not going to serve for the next couple of days, I've got a couple of practices scheduled, and I'll do everything I can.

"It's not too serious. I'll just take it day by day and give myself the best chance."
