Khairul Hafiz Jantan's reign as Malaysia's fastest man in the 200m event lasted just two years as Russel Alexander Nasir Taib broke his record at the 2019 Queensland Track Classic on Saturday.
The 21-year-old Australian-Malaysian sprinter clocked a time of 20.77s with a wind reading of 2.0m/s to finish second behind Japan's Kei Takase in Brisbane, Australia.
He beat Khairul Hafiz's national record of 20.90s set at the 94th Malaysian Open in 2017 — he had previously come close to beating it earlier at the QA Shield Series in January, recording a time of 20.94s.
M. Jegathesan held the previous record with a time of 20.92s that stood for 49 years.

However, Russel was unable to snatch Khairul Hafiz's other record in men's 100m (10.18s) as he finished with a time of 10.49s.
Two other Malaysian athletes also enjoyed success in Brisbane, with Hakimi Ismail winning the men's triple jump event and Wei Lee Hup pipping compatriot Nauraj Singh Randhawa to a men's high jump bronze medal.
