Malaysia's hopes of winning more medals in squash at the 2018 Commonwealth Games were dashed after Syafiq Kamal and Ng Eain Yow were knocked out in the men's doubles quarter-finals by former 2016 doubles champions Alan Clyne and Greg Lobban on Friday.
Despite starting well with a 11-9 win in the first set, the pair, who overcame compatriots Nafiizwan Adnan and Ivan Yuen in an earlier round, lost the remaining sets 6-11, 5-11 to the Scottish duo.
"We played well in the first set. but their experience and physical condition were better than ours," Ng told Astro Arena.
Despite the defeat, Syafiq looked at the overall Gold Coast 2018 experience positively.
"We are satisfied to reach the quarter-finals. We wanted to win the match, but at the same time, we knew it would not be easy," he added.
They joined compatriots Rachel Arnold and S. Sivasangari, who were beaten 8-11, 10-11 by England's Laura Massaro and Sarah-Jane Perry in the women's doubles quarter-finals earlier, through the exit door.
With their exit, the Malaysian squash contingent ended their campaign with just Nafiizwan's bronze medal in the men's singles to show for.
