The Malaysia national men's hockey team finished fifth at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after beating Scotland 2-1 on Friday.

The two teams faced off in the fifth place match after finishing third in their respective pools.

Despite going behind in the 11th minute to a field goal from Alan Forsyth, the Speedy Tigers drew level through Shahril Saabah in the 21st minute before Amirol Aideed grabbed the winner with a penalty corner goal in the 39th minute.

The victory marked their best finish since winning a bronze medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

"The national players are still disappointed because we missed out on the semi-finals especially after trying their best," head coach Stephen van Huizen told Astro Arena.

"However, at the very least we ended the campaign in a better position than the rest of the teams that did not make it to the semi-finals."

On the same day, South Africa defeated Wales 3-2 to finish ninth, while Pakistan overcame Canada 3-1 in the seventh place match.

Host nation Australia, who won the last five gold medals in men's hockey at the Commonwealth Games, will take on England and India will play against New Zealand later today to determine this year's finalists.
