Despite carrying a knee injury, Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad braved on to claim Malaysia's first gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, today.

The national weightlifter picked up the injury on his right knee one week before the Games but persevered to deliver the gold medal in the men’s 56kg event.

"I actually put up a bold front because it hurts, but I guess I just cannot let my family, country and myself down," he told the media at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre.

"The cheers from everybody have helped to ease my pain."

The 24-year-old weightlifter, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, cleared 261kg and cracked the record of 260kg set by his idol, Amirul Hamizan, in the 2002 edition in Manchester, England.

Apart from breaking the Games record, he also created a new record in the snatch event after lifting 117kg, rewriting the old record of 116kg also set by Amirul in 2010 in New Delhi, India.

He said he took the challenge from Amirul Hamizan, who is also the weightlifting team manager, to break the records.

"Personally, I am very proud of my achievement today. All the efforts and wait pay off. Gold Coast is very good to me," he added.

"Before the event today, I could not sleep well thinking of the responsibility. But talking to my parents helps to take my mind away."
