Afiq Ali Hanafiah ended Malaysia's drought of 16 years without a Commonwealth Games medal in athletics after finishing third in the men's 100m T12 (visual impairment) final in Gold Coast on Thursday.
The 24-year-old para-athlete, who won gold at the ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur last year, clocked 11.28s to finish behind South African duo Ndodomzi Ntutu (11.02s) and Hilton Langenhoven (11.27s).
His bronze medal success was the country's first Commonwealth Games medal since Manchester 2002 when Hisham Khaironi bagged silver in the men's 100m EAD event and Yuan Yufang clinched bronze in the women's 20km walk.
Govindasamy Saravanan remains still the only Malaysian athlete to win a gold medal when he emerged victorious in the 50km walk in 1998.
