George one of five England players set to miss Six Nations opener

Jamie George will miss England's Six Nations opener against Ireland after dropping out of the squad's pre-tournament training camp with a hamstring problem.

England will begin their campaign against the defending champions in Dublin on February 1, an assignment made even harder with additional injuries to four other players.

George, who was replaced by Maro Itoje as England's captain for the Six Nations, left Saracens' Champions Cup pool game against Castres in the closing stages due to injury.

First-choice scrum-half Alex Mitchell, who missed the autumn Tests with a neck injury, could also miss the game with a knee problem he picked up against Munster on Friday.

However, Mitchell, unlike George, will travel to the camp in Girona, with England keen to maximise his chances of facing Ireland.

Leicester Tigers' Jack van Poortvliet, Northampton Saints' Alex Coles and Harlequins' Alex Dombrant are the other players who picked up issues while playing for their clubs.

Curtis Langdon (Northampton Saints), Arthur Clark (Gloucester Rugby), Ben Spencer (Bath Rugby), Henry Pollock (Northampton Saints) and Raffi Quirke (Sale Sharks) will all join the squad as England's preparations begin on Tuesday at the team's training base.
