The Singapore women's table tennis team proved to be too strong for Malaysia as the former steamrolled to their fifth gold medal in the last six finals at the Commonwealth Games.

Despite the defeat, the Malaysia table tennis contingent could take consolation in ensuring a medal finish for the fourth consecutive edition and their first silver medal at the Games since 2014.

Zhou Jingyi and Zeng Jian dispatched of Karen Lyne and Ho Ying 3-1 in the doubles match before three-time Olympic medalist Feng Tianwei took down Alice Chang 3-0 in the first singles.

Ho Ying tried to mount an unlikely comeback in the second singles but Zeng prevailed 3-1.

The Malaysian paddlers began their campaign with a 0-3 loss to Australia but reached the quarter-finals with group stage wins over Maldives and Mauritius.

They then stunned defending champions India 3-2 before pulling off a 3-2 comeback win against Wales in the semis.
