Amir Daniel Abdul Mejeed created history on Tuesday as he became the first Malaysian to win a judo medal at the Commonwealth Games.

The 17-year-old, competing in the men's 73kg weight class, won by default against Dato Matsoukatov of Cyprus in one of the bronze medal deciders at the Coventry Arena.

His achievement was even sweeter considering judo not being one of the sports earmarked for a medal finish by the Malaysian contingent.

Amir began the competition by beating Samoa's William Tai Tin 10-0 before losing to Australian jukoda Jake Bensted, who later won a bronze too, in the quarter-finals.

He then bounced back in the repechage round, defeating Mozambique's Narciso Mozana, to reach the medal fight.

In the final, England's Daniel Powell overcame Faye Njie of The Gambia to win the gold medal in front of his home crowd.

As for Malaysia's other judo representative, Kamini Sri Segaran, she was knocked out in the first round of the women's 57kg event.
