Jannik Sinner came from behind to defeat Tristan Schoolkate and book his place in round three of the Australian Open with a 4-6 6-4 6-1 6-3 victory.

Home hopeful Schoolkate stunned the world number one early in Thursday's contest at Rod Laver Arena when he broke serve to take the first set.

Yet that spurred Sinner into gear, and the defending champion swiftly took the match away from the world number 173.

Schoolkate was able to offer some resistance in the final set, bravely fending off six break points at one stage, but Sinner served out the win, clattering a forehand winner on his first match point.

"It's always tough to play against a player I don't know well, he was playing much better than I was at the beginning," Sinner said.

"I have to be very happy still about my performance, never taking things for granted. I'm very glad to be in the next round.

"At every tournament there is always someone who comes in and plays very well, every round here is very tough."

Sinner will take on Marcos Giron in the third round.

Data Debrief: Nine wins to match Nole

Sinner became the youngest player to register nine consecutive wins at the Australian Open in the men's singles since Novak Djokovic between 2008 and 2009.

He is also the fourth player during the Open Era to claim 16 consecutive wins at hard-court grand slams before turning 24, after Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and John McEnroe.

Overall, he has won 34 grand slam matches on the surface, surpassing Andreas Seppi for the most of any Italian in the Open Era.
