Iga Swiatek cruised into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with a comfortable straight-sets win over lucky loser Eva Lys on Monday.

The former world number one only needed 59 minutes to book her place in the last eight of the tournament, triumphing 6-0 6-1 on Rod Laver Arena.

Lys, who made history by becoming the first lucky loser to reach the Australian Open fourth round, started with intent, forcing Swiatek to go on the defensive in the first game.

The Pole had to defend two break points before edging into the lead, and she did not look back from there. She won the rest of the games in the first set despite Lys' attempts to prevent the bagel scoreline.

Swiatek got another early break in the second set to race into a 3-0 lead before Lys got on the scoreboard. The Belgian then valiantly defended three break points, forcing six deuces in the penultimate game, though her efforts proved in vain as Swiatek eventually got her way before serving to love to see out the match.

Swiatek will face Emma Navarro, who beat Daria Kasatkina 6-4 5-7 7-5, in the next round.

Data Debrief: Swiatek continues bid to reclaim top spot

Swiatek could reclaim the world number one spot at the end of the Australian Open depending on Aryna Sabalenka's result, and she has certainly shown she is up for the fight.

She has dropped just 11 games in Melbourne so far, though seven of those came in her first-round match against Katerina Siniakova.

Swiatek is the youngest player to achieve their 10th quarter-final in major events since Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Australian Open 2009.

Since 2020, only Sabalenka has reached more grand slam quarter-finals (11), but in the same time, nobody has won more grand slam matches than Swiatek (82).
