Malaysia's final attempts to win at least one pencak silat gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games did not materialise on Wednesday.
On the final day of pencak silat events in Indonesia, the country, who won 10 gold medals — four artistic, four men's combat, and two women's combat — at last year's SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, only managed to bag two silver and one bronze medals.
In the morning, Nor Hamizah Abu Hassan and Nur Syazreen Abdul Malik finished third in the women's double artistic event with 558 points behind winners Ayu Sidan Wilantari and Ni Made Dwiyanti of Indonesia (574 points) and runners-up Saowanee Chanthamunee and Oraya Choosuwan of Thailand (564 points).
Coupled with the Indonesia contingent's wins in men's singles and women's team events on the same day, the host nation swept clean all pencak silat artistic gold medals.
Later in the day, Khaizul Yaacob had a good chance of winning a gold medal in the Class J 90kg-95kg combat final.
However, the national silat exponent suffered several point deductions and allowed Vietnam's Nguyen Van Tri to seal a 5-0 win.
Then, in a 2017 SEA Games rematch, Fauzi Khalid was unable to beat Vietnam's Tran Dinh Ham this time around in the Class F 70kg-75kg gold medal match, losing 0-5.
In total, Malaysia won four silver and four bronze medals in pencak silat, which was included at the Asian Games for the first time this year.
Their pencak silat participation was also not short of controversy, as Al Jufferi Jamari walked out the ring in protest of unfair judging standards on Monday.
