The Malaysia men’s 4x100m relay team is hoping to create an upset in the event on the last day of athletics competition at the 2018 Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang.
The quartet of Khairul Hafiz Jantan, Jonathan Nyepa, Haiqal Hanafi and Zulfiqar Ismail clocked 39.59s to be placed fourth out of seven teams in qualifying heats at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Wednesday night.
Indonesia recorded the fastest time of 39.03s followed by Taiwan and Thailand in 39.15s and 39.52s in the heats respectively.
"We are happy to enter the final and our target is to set a new national record and after that anything can happen," said Khairul Hafiz.
Meanwhile, national discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin disappointed as he emerged fifth among 11 participants with a throw of 57.70m.
Hakimi Ismail and Iskandar Alwi also failed to shine in the men’s triple jump and men’s pole vault respectively.
Hakimi, who is the national record holder for triple jump, recorded 16.15m to be placed seventh out of 14 participants, while Iskandar, who is also the national record holder for pole vault, cleared 5.20m to end in the ninth spot out of 13 athletes.
Malaysia have so far failed to garner any medals in athletics in Indonesia.
