There is a possibility Lee Zii Jia may not be part of the upcoming Thomas Cup contingent, national coaching director Rexy Mainaky revealed after having discussions with the independent shuttler’s team.

Rexy, who held talks with Lee’s manager Lee Zii Yii and coach Wong Tat Meng on Tuesday, said nothing has been decided but Zii Yii and Wong spoke about what they intended for the men’s singles shuttler.

“Team LZJ are targeting a world top eight ranking, and Zii Jia needs to play in tournaments to accumulate points. He will play at the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships, Malaysia Masters as well as in Singapore and Australia.

“It could be an overload for him if he plays in the Thomas Cup as well. This is an Olympic year and the shuttlers will naturally prepare to be at their best for that. We understand their planning and are supportive of it,” said Rexy.

The national body have until April 13 to finalize the Thomas & Uber Cup squads, with Rexy due another meeting with Zii Yii and Wong to get their verdict on Zii Jia’s inclusion.

The Thomas Cup is scheduled for April 28 – May 5, two weeks before the Malaysia Masters takes place.

Lee is confirmed for his second Olympics appearance in the Paris showcase this July.

The world number 11 will be the only Malaysian men’s singles to feature at the Olympics, after Ng Tze Yong missed out due to an ongoing back injury.

The other men’s singles shuttlers in consideration for the Thomas Cup are Leong Jun Hao, Eogene Ewe and Justin Hoh.

Malaysia are grouped together with Denmark, Hong Kong and Algeria at the Thomas Cup.
