Zii Jia admits he may never escape being compared to Chong Wei
Lee Zii Jia, who won his first match of the year in India on Wednesday, admits he may never escape the constant comparison with Lee Chong Wei for the rest of his career.
“As Malaysia’s number one, people will always compare me to Chong Wei and I can’t get rid of that. This is something I will have to face for the rest of my career.
“I think I’m getting more experienced dealing with this,” Lee told the Badminton World Federation.
The world number 10 also said things have “gotten weird” between him and the three-time Olympic silver medalist ever since he left the national body two years ago.
The Malaysian is still discovering himself on court after roping experienced singles coach Wong Tat Meng last year.
His gameplay is evidently changing, and it is clear he is still trying to find his groove.
“I have my team and an experienced coach to thank. They are doing their best with me, and as for myself I just have to keep believing in myself.”
Lee is due a big clash as he bids to reach the India Open last-eight, with Jonatan Christie standing in his way in the second round.
Both shuttlers have won four times each in eight meetings.
Lee beat Christie in their last meet at the World Championships last year.
