Yew Sin-Ee Yi into German Open semi-finals after straight game success
Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi ensured Malaysians will have a reason to keep watching the ongoing German Open after the men’s doubles pair checked into the semi-finals of the Super 300 event with a straight game victory.
Ong-Teo steered themselves into the last four of the first event in Europe this year after overcoming Chinese Taipei’s Lu Ching-yao-Yang Po-han 21-19, 21-10 in under 40-minutes.
The first game was a close affair, with the Malaysians taking the lead after Teo’s tight net shot failed to be returned by Lu.
Ong-Teo were far more comfortable in the second game to seal the victory, which pits them next against Chinese pair He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu.
This opponents are expected to be a far greater threat, having recently won the Thailand Masters men’s doubles title.
Ong-Teo will need to bring their A game against He-Ren if they are to go the distance in this tournament to chase a spot at the Paris Olympics.
The winner of this tournament will receive 7,000 points, which would push them closer to the top eight Race To Paris rankings.
The pair missed out on crucial qualification points at the India Open in January after Teo was turned away at the New Delhi airport after making a mistake with his visa application.
Ong-Teo are the only Malaysians left at the German Open after two other mixed doubles pairs – Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai both lost in the quarter-finals.
