Lee Zii Jia rated his performance five over 10 after losing in straight games 17-21, 11-21 against South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok-jin at the World Championships opening match on Monday.

“Definitely five,” was his reply when asked to rate himself over 10.

“When I say five, I mean physically and endurance as well, that’s where I need to improve. I need to go back and work with the team on this. Overall I’m happy to have completed the first match without any pain and without injuries.

“That’s most important for me. My next target is to find my tournament feeling,” said Lee, who also described his toughest period in the last few months was going through rehab.

“I was desperate to get back to training, and was wondering why the injury took so long to heal. The progress was boring to me. It was my first experience dealing with this situation, and I’m happy I got through it.”

Five would be accurate to describe Lee’s performance against Jeon.

He was moving smoothly around the court and scored points through his smashes, but also committed several unforced errors in both games.

In the second game, it was clear that he could not cope with Jeon’s speed and intensity, and this is something he will need to work on in the upcoming competitions.

This game was Lee's first competitive outing in five months since he last featured at the All-England.
