An acid test awaits Lee Zii Jia in his 2023 BWF World Championships opener after being drawn against world number five Jonatan Christie in one of the plum fixtures in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The unseeded Malaysian was always going to get a tough opener against the top 10 shuttlers, and Christie should pose a considerable threat if the latter turns up in good form on the day.

Both shuttlers are not separated much in their previous seven showdowns dating back to 2018, with Lee prevailing thrice compared to the Indonesian’s four wins.

Both men last met at the Denmark Open last year, where Lee won in three close games en route to the final.

Christie recently reached the Japan Open final, while Lee made it to three semi-finals this year.

Ng Tze Yong, who is the other men’s singles shuttler in the main draw, faces last year’s bronze medalist Zhao Jun Peng of China.

Meanwhile three seeded national doubles pairs – Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi and reigning world champs Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik – all received byes as Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, who were promoted to the main draw, face French pair Lucar Corvee-Ronan Labar.

Anna Ching-Teoh Mei Xing play an American pair, while Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien are up against a Swedish combination in the women's doubles.

Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei received byes in the mixed doubles, while Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing face opponents from Maldives.

In the women’s singles, S. Kisona take on Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu-po, while Goh Jin Wei is up against Hungary's Vivien Sandorhazi.

The contingent are seeking to add to Chia-Soh's victory from last year after the duo ended Malaysia's 45-year wait for world champions in the sport.
