The reunited Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong scored a hard-earned 21-15, 22-24, 21-16 victory over young Japanese pair Hiroki Okamura-Masayuki Onodera in the BWF World Championships second round on Wednesday.

The 10th seeds were playing their first match together since going separate ways in August, and had the luxury of rest after receiving a first-round bye, compared to their opponents who had already played.

Goh-Tan showed rustiness having not played together for a few months, but soon found the gear needed to come away with a 21-15 win in the first game.

Okamura-Onodera upped the tempo in the second game and were the aggressors to eventually level with a 24-22 win.

The third game needed experience to prevail, which the Malaysians brought to the fore to eventually seal the deal 21-16.

They now face Germans Bjarne Geiss-Jan Colin Volker in the third round.

In the men’s singles, Lee Zii Jia also came through but not before he was put through his paces by Ygor Coelho for a 21-14, 22-24, 21-14 win.

The sixth seed wasstill not back to his best form, even though he did manage to see off the 50th ranked Brazilian after seizing a healthy lead in the decider.

Lee’s loud roar after winning showed how relieved he was to come away with the victory.

He now play either Kanta Tsuneyama or Hans Kristian Vittinghus for a place in the last eight.
