National coaching director Wong Choong Hann has tested positive for Covid-19 and will undergo a period of self-isolation ahead of the national contingent's departure for the Asian leg of the BWF World Tour in Thailand on Monday.

“Wong is asymptomatic and is observing self-isolation. With his exception, all the pre-tournament swab tests undergone by a total 39 shuttlers and coaches came back negative,” read a statement from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

The national body also confirmed the Malaysian badminton team have been given clearance to depart for Bangkok. The contingent will observe a period of quarantine until January 11th upon arrival, as well as a series of swab tests on Day 4, Day 9, Day 13 and Day 18 within three days of departing back home.

The players who have qualified for the backdated World Tour Finals (January 27th-31st) will need to take further swab tests upon returning to the country.

In total, each member of the national team including players, coaches and officials will undergo five to seven swab tests.

Shuttlers from other countries have also been doing rigorous swab tests before departing to Bangkok.

Danish shuttlers Anders Antonsen and Viktor Axelsen also confirmed they are en route to Bangkok for the much awaited tournament trilogy which consists of two Thailand Open and the backdated World Tour Finals.
