Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun gave Malaysian badminton a huge cheer as the young pair stunned Olympic champions Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin 21-18, 11-21, 21-18 to win the Taipei Open title on Sunday.

The Malaysians were not expected to come away with this Super 300 title facing the home favourites and top seeds on their home turf, but they stayed cool and composed to come away with one of their biggest career wins.

Man-Tee were trailing 17-18 in the deciding game which their opponents had dominated, but realised Lee-Wang were too eager to finish off the game and forced the issue.

True enough, the world number four pair caved in with several hasty returns to the net, leaving the Malaysians to come away with the unlikely triumph after 54 minutes.

Amazingly enough, Man-Tee beat five home pairs en route to the title.

They collected US$39,500 (RM175,854) as champions for their second title of the season after winning the Syed Modi International in January.

The pair’s victory also meant Malaysia defended the men’s doubles title in this tournament, which Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong had won in 2019 before the pandemic hit.

But the home crowd were not disappointed as two other top seeded home shuttlers won the men’s and women’s singles titles.

Chou Tien-chen beat Kodai Naraoka 14-21, 21-10, 21-6 for the men’s singles title, while Tai Tzu-ying won the women’s singles after she overcame Saena Kawakami 21-17, 21-16.

Hong Kong won the women’s and mixed doubles titles through Ng Tsz Yau-Tsang Hiu Yan and Reginald Lee-Ng respectively.

Ng-Tsang overcame Rui Hirokami-Yuna Kato 21-15, 18-21, 21-19, while Ng had earlier teamed up with Lee to thrash Ruttanapak Oupthong-Chasinee Korepap 21-8, 21-9 for the mixed doubles success.
