Ng Tze Yong will miss the upcoming French Open & All-England (March 5-17) as he prepares to undergo a minor back surgery in a verdict which is set to dent his hopes of qualifying to the Paris Olympics.

The national singles shuttler was hit with another injury blow at last week’s Badminton Asia Team Championships where he only played one full match against Brunei.

He later faced an anxious wait to learn the extent of his injury, which is now confirmed that he will have to go under the knife.

“In consultation with the medical team, Tze Yong has agreed to prioritize his recovery process and will undergo surgery on his back next week. This minor surgery is expected to keep him out of action for two to six weeks,” read a statement from the Badminton Association of Malaysia.

The national body are hopeful the world number 16 could make a comeback at the Madrid Masters and Badminton Asia Championships at the end of March and early April respectively.

This is the latest injury setback to Ng, who also had to retire at the Malaysia Open first round, and after that at last week’s Asian team event quarter-finals against Singapore.

Ng currently occupies the final qualifying spot to the Paris Olympics in 16th, but he will be overtaken after the French Open and All-England.

The Johor-born was scheduled to face Lakshya Sen at the All-England opener, who sits just behind him in the Race To Paris rankings.

Ng’s absence will mean Lee Zii Jia is the only Malaysian representative at the upcoming European meets which offers significant Olympics qualifying points being a Super 750 and Super 1000 event.
