Malaysian archer Syaqiera Mashayikh recorded her personal best record in the women's individual recurve ranking round at Tokyo 2020 on Friday.

The 21-year-old, who was the third Malaysian female archer to qualify for the Olympic Games, shot for 630 to finish 43rd among the 64 archers in action at the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field.

In doing so, she beat her previous best of 619 as well as the national Olympic record of 626 set by Mon Redee Sut Txi at Athens 2004.

She is now scheduled to take on Elena Osipova of the Russian Olympic Committee in the first round of the women's elimination round on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, South Korean female archers asserted dominance by claiming the top three seeds with An San (680), Jang Minhee (677) and Kang Chaeyoung (675).

Their scores were good enough to beat the Olympic record of 673 achieved by Ukraine's Lina Herasymenko in 1996, but it may not be officially recognised due to the event taking place before the official opening ceremony.

South Korea are the country to beat in archery events at the Olympics, having won 23 gold medals since 1972.
