Soniia Cheah got her first victory at the Tokyo Olympics without even lifting her racquet on Tuesday after the Malaysian was awarded a walkover against Laura Sarosi, her scheduled opponent who suffered an injury.

Cheah was supposed to play the Hungarian at 1pm local time, but Sarosi’s injury meant the Malaysian will face Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon on Wednesday, with the winner progressing to the knockout stage.

Ratchanok had beaten Sarosi in straight games on Sunday to get off her third Olympics campaign to a winning start.

World number 35 Cheah will have to produce the performance of her career to upstage the former world champion, whom she failed to beat in in four of their previous meetings.

Meanwhile, women’s doubles pair Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean ended their Olympics campaign with a 21-19, 21-16 victory over Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith.

The Malaysians were in control throughout the match to upstage their opponents in 44 minutes to end their Group A campaign on a high note, ensuring they did not finish bottom of their group.

Men’s doubles duo Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik are in action later today to take on Canadians Jason Ho-Nyl Yakura in their final group match.

Chia-Soh must win convincingly and hope that Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan defeat South Korea’s Choi Sol-gyu-Seo Seung-jae on the same day so they can qualify for the quarter-finals.
