World number one men’s pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani joined the Road To Gold (RTG) programme on Wednesday, giving them a timely boost ahead of a busy second half of 2025.
Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai are the other two professional shuttlers to join the national programme created to help Malaysia win its first Olympic gold medal at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
For Goh-Izzuddin, the additional performance support RTG couldn’t have come at a better time.
At present, the pair hold a slim lead over their compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik who are second in the world.
Goh-Izzuddin will be aiming for a better second half of the year, where they excelled last year.
After the 2024 Paris Olympics, Goh-Izzuddin secured the Japan Open (Super 750), China Open (Super 1000) and Arctic Open (Super 500) titles, amassing massive ranking points which drove them to the summit of the men’s doubles standings.
Winning those three titles alone earned them 33,700 points, which formed one third of the 91, 090 points they currently have.
This year, the pair’s best result came when they won the India Open (Super 750) title.
The Badminton World Federation takes the 10 best results for every shuttler/pair world rankings points.
Sze Fei thanked the RTG programme for their inclusion.
“We are honoured to join the Road To Gold programme for the first time. The additional support will help us greatly as we aim to maintain our ranking and achieve big things this year.
“A big thanks to Youth & Sports Minister YB Hannah Yeoh for offering us this program, and to the RTG committee & staff for their help,” he said.
