Chinese Taipei men’s singles star Chou Tien-chen and 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Goh Jin Wei are set to headline this year’s Malaysia Purple League (MPL) edition, making its return after a three-year hiatus in October.
Vietnamese veteran Nguyen Tien-Minh, Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan and Singapore’s mixed doubles pair Terry Hee-Jessica are the other notable international stars, while Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai and Soniia Cheah make the other notable local participation.
Other countries that are said to send their top shuttlers are also Indonesia.
Besides some stars allure, the total RM500,000 prize money would also make the Purple League a competitive affair.
The sixth edition of the MPL will be held from October 1-7 at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam, followed by the Grand Finals at the Arena of Stars, Resort World Genting on Oct 8-9.
The league, now headed by former shuttler Ho Khek Mong, aims to provide young and upcoming shuttlers with a chance to play against some of the best, and would be hoping for a successful tournament this year as it gets a reprieve after the pandemic.
Puchong United BC were the MPL’s last winners back in 2019.
World number two Kento Momota had previously featured in 2018, while Tai Tzu-ying also played at in 2017 edition.
