There is set to be a Lee Zii Jia vs Kento Momota showdown at the 2020 Thomas Cup (Oct 9-17) after Malaysia were drawn in Group D with Japan, Canada and England on Wednesday.

The rescheduled biennial competition will be held in the city of Aarhus, Denmark a year after it was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Based on the draw, Malaysia stand a good chance of progressing to the quarter-finals, along with Japan, who were the last edition’s finalists.

However, Malaysia's Uber Cup contingent should have a much tougher assignment after they were group together with China, Denmark and Canada in Group D.

In the 2018 edition, Malaysia's Thomas Cup contingent were knocked out 3-1 by Indonesia in the quarter-finals.

The Uber Cup team, meanwhile, crashed out in a competitive group containing China and Indonesia.

For the record, Malaysia won the Thomas Cup five times, with the last triumph coming at the 1992 edition, while they never got their hands on the Uber Cup trophy.

Malaysia recently did well in team competitions — the men’s team made the final of last year's Asian Team Championships as the women’s reached the semi-finals.
