To witness Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei become Malaysia’s first mixed doubles world champions seemed unthinkable just six months ago, when the pair were split up by the national association.

At that time, both shuttlers were not getting along together and Toh at one point even removed all her postings of Chen on socialmedia.

In June, the pair were reunited and they gradually begin to find their chemistry.

But yet, no one would have expected the world number four to complete a fairytale victory on Merdeka Day.

Not even them.

“This year we did not make it to any final, but we’re thankful we managed to make this breakthrough to become world champions. I thank Toh for believing in our partnership even when the going got tough.

“We had our ups and downs for two and half years, but she stuck with me. I am thankful my partner is Toh Ee Wei,” said Chen, while his partner echoed the same sentiment.

“I am thankful to him for having the confidence with me on the front court. Similarly, I trust him at the back court. Today is our most powerful match, we gave it our all on the court,” said Toh.

The pair can now put themselves on the same pedestal as their coach Nova Widianto, a two-time world champion for Indonesia.

“He always motivates us and gives us confidence. Today we went in to just fight. If we managed to make Malaysia happy by becoming world champions, we are happy we managed to deliver it,” said the pair.

Chen-Toh stunned China’s world number two pair Jiang Zhen Bang-Wei Ya Xin 21-15, 21-14 in 40-minutes to claim their biggest career success yet.
