Swiss Open: Pearly-Thinaah make history by becoming women's doubles champs

Malaysia's women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah gave the Malaysian badminton fraternity a big cheer after they put on a powerful performance to beat Bulgaria's Gabriela-Stefani Stoeva 21-19, 21-12 to clinch to Swiss Open title on Sunday.

The victory for the world number 30 pair, clinched in 43 minutes, meant they became the maiden Malaysian pair to win the women's doubles in the history of the tournament.

The young Malaysians took home RM45,000 for their efforts.

In doing so, they also saved the national contingent's blushes by returning home with a title in this Super 300 event.

Men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia and men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who were slated to make the final, fell limply in the semis.

Viktor Axelsen meanwhile continued his fine run in the men's singles with a 21-16, 21-6 victory over Thailand's Kunvalut Vitidsarn, who beat Lee in the semis.

The mixed doubles saw French pair Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue beat Danish duo Mathias Christiansen-Alexandre Boje 21-19, 21-19.
