Malaysia made a winning start at the Sudirman Cup after easily overcoming Australia 5-0 in their opening Group C match in Suzhou, China on Sunday.

A full strength line-up was fielded for this opening match including Lee Zii Jia, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah against the Australian minnows they were expected to trounce.

Mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai gave Malaysia after they overcame Kenneth Zhe-Gronya Somerville 21-17, 21-14 in a match that lasted only 28 minutes.

Lee, recently the centre of attention after declaring he’s in the process of hiring a new coach, easily doubled Malaysia's lead with a 21-13, 21-13 win over Ricky Tang after 25 minutes.

K. Letshanaa, who was recently reabsorbed into the national team, didn’t disappoint with a 21-19, 21-12 women's singles win over Tiffany Ho for the 3-0 lead.

Chia-Soh and Tan-Thinaah then completed their customary wins for the 5-0 victory.

But bigger tests await Malaysia with India and Chinese Taipei to come on Monday and Wednesday respectively.

Malaysia did well in the previous edition when they made the semi-finals.
