Malaysia will have an immediate chance at redemption when they face Indonesia in the Sudirman Cup quarter-finals on Friday, after the national contingent lost 4-1 to Japan in their final group match.

The national team have less than 24 hours to shake off the Japan loss, with a mammoth task looming against an in-form Indonesian side who topped their Group C.

Malaysia only picked up a point versus Japan through Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, who beat Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi in the men’s doubles.

The Tokyo Olympics bronze medalists are expected to come up with the goods once again, this time against world number one pair Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo-Marcus Fernaldi Gideon.

Chia-Soh broke their winless duck against the Indonesians in Tokyo, and if they can claim a second consecutive victory in what is expected to be the first match of this tie, it should set the tone for rest.

Lee Zii Jia, who lost in straight games against Kento Momota on Thursday, would most likely go up against Anthony Ginting in the men’s singles.

Lee said the defeat to the world number one, was only a warm-up as he looks to recalibrate for Friday's match.

“Yes I lost, but it's good warm-up ahead of the quarter-finals. Against Momota, I had a fantastic start but I just could not continue the momentum. Especially in the second game where he controlled all the way,” he said.

The women’s singles would be an interesting battle between S. Kisona and Putri Kusuma Wardani.

Kisona put on a much improved showing despite a straight game defeat to Akane Yamaguchi, and should be able to overcome an opponent younger than her and ranked lower on the world standings.

Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah will face a tall order against Olympic champions Greysia Polli-Apriyani Rahayu in the women’s doubles, and in the mixed doubles Hoo Pang Ron-Cheah Yee See will most likely contend against the more experienced Praveen Jordan-Melati Oktavianti.
