Ng Tze Yong admitted Anthony Ginting’s speed was too much to handle after the Indonesian brushed aside the Malaysian 21-15, 21-12 in the Singapore Open men’s singles quarter-finals on Friday.

Hopes were high on Ng to continue his good run at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, especially after the world number 47 beat two higher Hong Kong shuttlers in Angus Ng Ka Long and Lee Cheuk Yiu in earlier rounds.

Against Ginting, he gave a good account of himself in the first game until the 15-point mark before his opponent upped the pace for the opening win.

The second game was a show in class, as the world number six's speed and accuracy left Ng scrambling for answers.

“I could not follow his speed, he was simply too fast for me. I’m not disappointed with this defeat, as I had given my best to match him,” said Ng.

Despite his exit, it was not a day of lost opportunities for Malaysia with mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai making it through to the semis courtesy of a sterling victory.

Goh-Lai qualified for their third semi-finals of the season after recording a historic 22-20, 16-21, 21-18 victory over Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet.

The hard earned win, which saw the Malaysians rally from 16-18 in the deciding game, also ended a run of five consecutive defeats against the fourth seeds that dated back to 2018.

They next face top seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taerattanachai, a pair whom they recently beat at the Indonesia Open.

Dechapol-Sapsiree beat Chen Tang Jie-Valeree Siow 21-10, 22-20 to reach the semis, while another Malaysian pair Hoo Pang Ron-Toh Ee Wei lost 16-21, 14-21 against China’s Guo Xin Wa-Zhang Shu Xian.
