China claimed their maiden Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) title after they beat Malaysia who were without Lee Zii Jia 3-0 in the final in Shah Alam on Sunday.

Having excelled against Kenta Nishimoto to deliver the first point against Japan on Saturday, Lee was expected to give the host the first point.

But he couldn’t play due to an existing sinus issue, and Leong Jun Hao took his place as the first singles.

Leong tried his best against the left-hander, but couldn’t spring the surprise and lost 19-21, 17-21.

It was then up to Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to draw Malaysia level, but despite their best efforts, the Malaysians couldn’t cross the finish line as winners against Xie Hao Nan-Zeng Wei Han who won 21-16, 16-21, 23-21.

With the odds stacked against them, it was left to Eogene Ewe to breathe life to Malaysia’s campaign, but the pressure proved too much for the shuttler who turned 19 today (Sunday).

Ewe succumbed 10-21, 14-21 against Lei Lan Xi, who ultimately gifted China their maiden title in this tournament.

India meanwhile clinched the women’s title after their young prodigy Anmol Kharb turned in another match winning performance after she beat Pornpicha Choeikeewong 21-14, 21-9 in the third singles to confirm India’s 3-2 victory over Thailand.

The 17-year-old, who had also delivered the winning point against Japan in the semi-finals, foresees that her life will change after this.

“I am actually pretty young to win this. I’m ecstatic, this is a huge achievement for me. I think my life is going to change in a good way after this. History has been made for India in this tournament, today we will celebrate,” she said.

India got the first point through P.V.Sindhu in the first singles, before first women’s doubles Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand Pullela doubled that lead.

But Thailand stormed back to level proceedings through Busanan Ongbamrungphan (women’s singles) and Benyapa Aimsaard-Nuntakarn Aimsaard (women’s doubles), before Kharb turned in another heroic performance to announce herself on the international stage.
