SEA Games: Indonesia beat Malaysia to continue badminton gold streak

Malaysia's hopes of ending their SEA Games gold medal drought in the badminton men's team event did not materalise after losing to Indonesia 1-3 in the final at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex on Wednesday.

In a repeat of the 2017 final in Kuala Lumpur, where the national men's team lost 0-3, Malaysia started off on the wrong foot as Lee Zii Jia failed to pose too much trouble for Jonathan Christie, losing 9-21, 17-21.

However, men's doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik managed to restore parity by beating Fajar Alfian and Rian Ardianto 21-17, 21-13.

In the third game, Soong Joo Ven put on a strong performance against Anthony Ginting, whom he last faced at the Vietnam Open in 2015, but the world number eight proved to be too good as he lost 21-13, 15-21, 18-21.

Men's doubles shuttlers Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi then crashed to a 16-21, 19-21 loss to Wahyu Nayaka and Ade Yusuf to hand Indonesia their sixth straight SEA Games gold medal in the event since 2007 — badminton team events were not held in 2013.

Malaysia last won the gold medal in 2005.
