National doubles’ chief Rexy Mainaky believes the self-confidence of Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin is at an all-time high after the pair won the German Open men’s doubles title on Monday.

The world number 17 pair secured a phenomenal 23-21, 16-21, 21-14 triumph over Chinese pair Liu Yu Chen-Ou Xuan Yi to clinch their maiden title on the World Tour circuit after six years of partnership.

Their victory was made more incredible by the fact Izzuddin battled through the final few points with an injured right leg, even managing to deliver home the winning point in the 70-minute contest.

One of the first things Rexy would look into is the condition of the pair, who made an immediate journey to Birmingham for the All-England Open hours after triumphing in Germany.

“I will need to assess their condition, both physically and mentally. They must be tired after five days of intense competition. But what they have achieved in Germany will boost their self-belief and confidence.

“They implemented everything in practice on court. They were fearless, their team-work was brilliant and they were brave to take chances at the front court, which is their strength,” said Rexy.

At the All-England, Goh-Izzuddin have a first round clash against another Chinese pair in He Ji Ting-Tan Qiang.

Should they prevail, a showdown against national team-mates Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik is on the cards.

Chia-Soh were given a first-round bye after their Russian opponents Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov were barred following their country’s invasion of Ukraine.

That came as a good news for the fourth seeds, who would have an extra day of training after landing in Birmingham late Monday.

The pair had to pull out from the German Open after Soh tested positive for COVID-19, but he was given the green light to compete and had already been in training.

The other national pairs in action are Man Wei Chong-Kai Wun Tee, who have a tough opener against third seeds Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi.

Tan Kian Meng-Tan Wee Kiong play English pair Ben Lane-Sean Vendy, while Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi are up against Callum Hemming-Steven Stallwood.
