Rashid: We were confident to beat Indonesia in 1992 Thomas Cup final
Former national shuttler and coach Rashid Sidek recently reflected on his success winning the 1992 Thomas Cup, explaining how he needed to control his emotions in the final against Indonesia.
Malaysia beat Indonesia 3-2 in that historic final at the Stadium Negara.
It was the last time the country has tasted success in the prestigious team event.

“In that final, I actually preferred playing against Ardy Wiranata compared to other Indonesian players. This is because I had already beaten him before. I also had the experience playing in previous Thomas Cup editions.
“In 1988, I played in the third men’s singles.
n 1990 and 1992 I played as the first men’s singles, so I came into the final with experience. But it was still nerve wracking to play in the final.
“This is because we had come close before, but never won. In 1988 and 1990 we reached the final, but lost to China both times. So in 1992, we were ready to go all out,” explained Rashid to former national shuttler Ameer Zainuddin in a podcast session.
As it played out, Rashid delivered the first point after beating Wiranata 15-11, 10-15, 15-4 in the first game to set Malaysia on their way to victory.
“We were confident of beating Indonesia in the final, but it was not a certainty. What also helped us was that we played with the same team since the 1986 edition. Razif & Jalani (Sidek), Foo Kok Keong, Cheah Soon Kit were all part of the same team for many years.
“For me, it was all about controlling the emotions in the final. Our phenomenal crowd support was also crucial to help us beat Indonesia.”
