National women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah are set to train with an Indonesian men’s doubles pair in hopes of kick-starting their 2024 season which has yet to take off after three tournaments.

Tan-Thinaah have only made it as far as the quarter-finals in their last three events this year, results that are far from desired with the Paris Olympics looming only five months away.

Taking that into account, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have moved to rope in Indonesian men’s doubles pair Ade Yusof-Gerardo Rizqullah for a month-long training stint at the Academy Badminton Malaysia to help the pair.

“We need to increase their sparring quality in training sessions, and as such we have decided to bring in an Indonesian men’s doubles pair. This pair will help them until they leave for Europe, and after they return another pair will come in.

“These two sparring partners will implement what I want to see on court. We need to make them more aggressive. The gap between Pearly-Thinaah and our other women's doubles pair is quite wide apart, and plus Indonesia has a lot of good and young independent shuttlers . Hence why we decided to rope them in,” said BAM national coaching director Rexy Mainaky.

Yusof is a 30-year-old shuttler who was part of the Indonesian men’s team that clinched gold at the 2019 SEA Games.

His best achievement on the World Tour came through a solitary title in 2018 at the Dutch Open with former partner Wahyu Nayaka.

Not much is known about Rizqullah, but it is hoped the Indonesians will help to elevate the gameplay of the world number 14 pair.

Tan-Thinaah are due only one major assignment this month which comes at the upcoming Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) next week.

The women’s team have Thailand and the United Arab Emirates for company at the BATC.
