Malaysia’s top women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah were forced to withdraw from the upcoming Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) in Dubai next week, after Tan came down with a flu illness.

The national body confirmed her exclusion on Wednesday, which ultimately came as a blow to the shuttler who had recently recovered from a viral infection.

“She was doing great. Mentally, she was so fired up for the BAC. Everything seemed alright until Monday.

“It was only on Tuesday when she was shaking and complained of breathing difficulties. We have been told she is down with the flu,” national doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky told New Straits Times.

Tan is expected to recover in time for the Sudirman Cup (May 14-21) in Suzhou, China.

Tan-Thinaah’s withdrawal would mean their opponents Jongkolphan Kititharakul-Rawinda Prajonglai should get a walkover to the second round.

Vivian Hoo-Lim Chiew Sien, the other Malaysian women's double pair at the tournament, face China’s Zhang Shu Xian-Zheng Yu in the first round.
