Misbun Sidek expressed his desire to birth a fourth world number one under his tutelage after he was officially appointed as the national junior development director by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

"I have already produced three world number one players, and it is my wish to find a fourth one, which is why I embrace this new position.

"It is a new role that will be challenging, but I promise to deliver my best.

"After the junior shuttlers did not perform well recently, I took it upon myself to try and revive our development programme," said Misbun at a press conference on Tuesday.

The former men’s singles head coach’s appointment came after junior shuttlers were transferred from the Bukit Jalil Sports School to the Academy Badminton Malaysia on a full-time basis beginning this year.

They will train, study and live under the same roof as their seniors, as well as share the same facilities.

Now, they will be guided by the supremo who made the likes of Wong Choong Hann, Roslin Hashim and Lee Chong Wei to reach the top of the world rankings.

For now, Misbun will not make any changes and assess the current set-up first.

"I will need to review the current structure, so give me some time.

"I will have a look into every department and look at the available coaches, before deciding if a new structure is needed.

"For me, discipline is very important. I want to see if the players are in their comfort zones or not. They have to change if they are," added Misbun.

BAM president Norza Zakaria, also present at the press conference, said Misbun will be given full rein over the junior development.

The national juniors were a big letdown last year, failing to win any medal at the World Junior Championships and also the Asian Junior Championships.

Misbun has some time to prepare his new charges ahead of the Asian Junior Championships (July 11-19) in Suzhou, China and the World Junior Championships (October 5-11) in Auckland, New Zealand.

Norza also confirmed Hendrawan will assume the men’s singles chief position.
