Presiden Persatuan Olimpian Malaysia (MOA), Karu Selvaratnam, kecewa apabila tiada seorang pun atlet yang beraksi dalam Sukan Olimpik Rio 2016 menghadiri Mesyuarat Agung Tahunan (AGM) MOA biarpun penubuhan badan induk itu untuk membantu mereka menghadapi persaraan.
MOA ditubuhkan semula selepas tidak aktif sejak beberapa tahun lalu. Hanya mereka yang pernah menyertai Sukan Olimpik layak menjadi ahli MOA dengan mereka yang bergelar Olimpian Malaysia terdiri daripada lebih 300 atlet.
Bagaimanapun, hanya 28 atlet menghadiri AGM MOA yang diadakan di ibu kota hari ini tanpa bintang yang beraksi di Olimpik Rio.
"Kami telah menghantar lebih 200 pucuk surat kepada Olimpian negara, malah kami turut mengumumkannya menerusi media beberapa hari lalu.
"Secara jujurnya, saya tidak begitu gembira," kata Karu.
Ketika ini, beberapa atlet yang beraksi di Rio seperti skuad badminton sedang menyertai kejohanan luar negara sementara atlet olahraga, renang dan terjun akan menghadapi kejohanan dalam masa terdekat.
AGM MOA menyaksikan Karu menang tanpa bertanding, begitu juga timbalannya yang juga bekas perenang negara, Jeffrey Ong.
"Saya sangat yakin MOA akan bertambah mantap dan akan memberi manfaat besar untuk dunia sukan," kata Presiden Majlis Olimpik Malaysia (MOM), Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Jaafar.
