Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik continued to make waves at the ongoing Fuzhou China Open after they brushed aside second seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan 21-13, 22-20 to book their place in the semi-finals.
The pair’s victory, achieved in only 26 minutes, was also sweet revenge over the Indonesians who beat them at the All-England final in March.
Chia-Soh’s victory came a day after they recovered from a game down to upset another Indonesian pair in Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
Chia recently told Stadium Astro that the pair had put too much pressure on themselves after defying the odds to reach the All-England final, resulting in several poor performances.
However, their wins over the world number two and five pairs should ignite a fire in them as they prepare to face Japan’s Takeshi Kamura-Keigo Sonoda for a place in the final.
There was double delight in the doubles camp as mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai were also in their elements, beating third seed Thais Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Sapsiree Taettanachai 21-13, 21-18.
The world number 11 face top seeds Zheng Si Wei-Huang Ya Qiong in the semi-finals on Saturday.
It was not all good news as two other pairs bowed out in the last eight.
Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying fell to an excruciating 21-18, 13-21, 22-24 defeat to second seeds Wang Li Lyu-Huang Dong Ping in the mixed doubles.
In the woman's doubles, Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean also lost to second seeds Yuku Fukhshima-Sayaka Hirota 15-21, 14-21.
Meanwhile, the men’s singles saw Kento Momota back in business as the Japanese saw off Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen 21-18, 12-21, 21-16 to check into the semi-finals.
Momota, who had overcame both Liew Daren and Lee Zii Jia en route to the quarter-finals, takes on another Dane in Rasmus Gemke.
