Malaysia set for Sudirman Cup with 3 formidable men's doubles
Malaysia will head to the upcoming Sudirman Cup (April 27-May 4) in China with one of their strongest men’s doubles line-up in recent years.
Leading the line are Badminton Asia Championships (BAC) champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, currently the toast of the country after their triumph in Ningbo, China on Sunday.
Chia-Soh have jumped to fourth on the latest world rankings after winning this prestigious Asian event, which offers points equivalent to a Super 1000 event.
Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin are the highest ranked pair in the squad, ranked second in the world.
The professional pair were unfortunate to crash out of the BAC quarter-finals after battling Chinese pair Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi in three close games, losing the final game 20-22.
World number seven Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun are the final pair listed for the team event.
National men’s doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi does have a selection dilemma of who to field in the group stage, but his first choice would certainly be Chia-Soh.
Malaysia play France in their opening group match, and the Indonesian coach will want his best pair against world number 18 Christo Popov-Toma Junior Popov.
But Pierngadi could start with Man-Tee for the second match against Australia, and use Goh-Izzuddin for the final game against Japan.
