Malaysia’s run at the Spain Masters came to an end in the quarter-finals after Cheam June Wei and Anna Ching-Yap Cheng Wen both lost to their top seeded opponents on Friday.

Indonesian shuttler Shesar Hiren Rhustavito proved too hot for Cheam, dispatching him comfortably 21-9, 21-10 in just 33 minutes.

Ng Tze Yong and Leong Jun Hao, the other national shuttlers in the men’s singles, had fallen in the opening two rounds.

Leong lost to his German opponent in the first round, while Ng pushed second seeded Frenchman Tomas Junior Popov in three games before losing.

Indonesia are guaranteed a finalist in the event as Shesar faces team-mate Chico Aura in the semis.

In the women’s doubles, scratch pair Ching-Yap came close to upsetting Amalie Mageland-Freja Ravn, but faltered in the closing stages of the match to lose 21-13, 18-21, 17-21.

Despite the defeat, the pair would be encouraged by their performance as they were playing in their tournament together.

Ching is Yap’s new partner following the retirement of Vivian Hoo.

The Spain Masters is one of the last few tournaments left on the BWF World Tour before the Tokyo Olympics in July.

With the postponement of the Malaysia and Singapore Open, all shuttlers will now focus solely on training to prepare for the Games.
