The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) and Badminton World Federation (BWF) jointly agreed to postpone the 2021 Malaysia Open following a rise in COVID-19 cases in the country.

"All attempts were made by the organisers and BWF to provide a safe tournament environment for all participants, but the recent surge in cases left no choice but to postpone the tournament," read an official BWF statement.

The new dates for the Super 750 event, originally scheduled to take place from May 25 to 30, would be decided in the future.

The postponement dealt a huge blow to shuttlers aiming to book their tickets to the Tokyo Olympics, as they are left with only the Singapore Open (June 1-6) to score much-needed qualifying points.
