Lee Zii Jia came through to the Malaysia Masters semi-finals after overcoming Anders Antonsen in the quarter-finals on Friday, but the professional shuttler could be doubtful to play in the semis.
This is after he appeared to suffer cramps after beating the Dane, and was immediately sent for recovery afterwards.
“He felt tightness in his leg after the second set. We have contacted the National Sports Institute to allow him to do an ice bath recovery session.
“He is suffering from cramps, and at this point we are trying our best to let him recover as much as possible. He has just finished his match so we can’t say much just yet. We will assess his condition further tomorrow,” said Lee Zii Yii, who is Zii Jia’s manager and sister.
The world number 10 has been on a grueling week-long excursion after winning last week’s Thailand Open, and now reaching the semi-finals at the Axiata Arena.
Engaging in an 83-minute battle against Antonsen clearly took its toll on the Malaysian, who lived up to expectations to beat the Dane 21-15, 19-21, 21-11 for the first time in a full match since the 2020 Malaysia Masters.
If he can feature on Saturday, Lee will face Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long whom he beat to win the Thailand Open title last Sunday.
Antonsen joked that the cool spray given to Lee in the third game played a part in his victory.
“I would like to get my hands on one of those,” said Antonsen, who also complimented his opponent’s return to form.
Malaysia are guaranteed a place in the final, after mixed doubles pairs Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon will face off in an all Malaysian semis.
In the men’s doubles, Junaidi Arif-Yap Roy King beat Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard 21-18, 14-21, 21-18 to become the country’s only entry into Saturday’s action.
They will face another Danish pair Kim Astrup-Anders Rasmussen in the last four.
