Ng Tze Yong suffered another injury heartbreak, this time at the Malaysia Masters where he was forced to retire in the second game against Angus Ng Ka Long on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was looking forward to putting on a good show in front of the home crowd, and he did well to win the first game 22-20.

But tragedy struck early in the second game, as the national men’s singles shuttler appeared to land awkwardly while trying to return his opponent’s shot.

Ng stayed down for a few minutes, and when he eventually got up, walked over to his coaches to indicate he could not continue.

It spelt another blow for the Johor-born, who is just returning to competitive action following a long layoff from a back injury he suffered last year.

There was good news in the doubles department, as Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah secured a 21-17, 21-16 victory over their Hong Kong opponents.

The Thailand Open champions will next face a Thai pair for a place in the quarter-finals.

Mixed doubles scratch pair Toh Ee Wei-Loo Bing Kun also carved out a hard-earned 20-22, 21-18, 21-15 victory in the first round, a victory which pits them against Chinese Taipei’s Nicole Chan-Ye Hong Wei in the second round.

Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien joined them in the mixed doubles second round, beating Supak Jomkoh-Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn 22-20, 21-19, which draws them against another Thai pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran next.

In the men’s doubles, Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing did well to oust Danish pair William Boe-Christian Kjaer 12-21, 21-11, 21-17, and they will face another Danish pair in Rasmus Kjaer-Frederi
